Numerical Oscillations in Electromagnetic Transients Programs

چکیده
The Electromagnetic transients progr am and its variants all use the “trapezoidal rule” numerical integration method. The trapezoidal rule is a second order numerical integration technique that is simple to implement. However, it is also susceptible to numerical oscillations when differentiat ing step changes in voltage and current. The program user should be aware of the potential for these oscillations when simulating circuits and systems using EMTP or EMTDC. These oscillations appear, for instance, on the voltage across an inductance after current interruption. The paper presents these oscillations that could occur in EMTP and EMTDC and some options to eliminate them.

Optimization of numerical integration methods for the simulation of dynamic phasor models in power systems
This paper proposes the use of frequency matched linear numerical integration techniques for the simulation of systems modelled by the dynamic phasors approach (DPA). Such methods show an increased accuracy and computational efficiency around the matched frequency. Such frequency matched methods are derived by analyzing the local truncation error in the frequency domain and determining the coef...
متن کاملParallel-in-Space-and-Time Scheme for Implicitly Coupled Electromechanical and Electromagnetic Transients Simulation
In this paper, we describe a parallel implementation of the implicitly coupled solution approach for combined electromechanical and electromagnetic transients simulation. In the proposed parallel-in-space-and-time scheme, the equations for transient stability (TS) are partitioned in space and the coupled-in-time electromagnetic transients equations (EMT) are partitioned in time. Thus each proce...
متن کاملValidation of Out-of-Step Protection With a Real Time Digital Simulator
This paper presents the development of a new time domain simulation program for the computation of machine and network transients over a wide frequency spectrum. The program uses the extensive capability for the detailed representation of, and the computation of electromagnetic transients on, the power system network available in the BPA Electromagnetic Transients Program (EMTP). The model of t...

The higher frequency transient signals generated as a result of a power system fault or disturbance provide the basis for an alternative approach to power system containing connectors and cables result in unsuitable operation of the system. However one major challenge is the need to ensure that the transients to be neutralized by electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) issues and cabling routes. T...
متن کاملExtreme THz nonlinearities in bulk and nanostructured semiconductors
Phase-locked electromagnetic transients in the terahertz (THz) spectral domain have become a unique contact-free probe of the femtosecond dynamics of low-energy excitations in semiconductors. Access to their nonlinear response, however, has been limited by a shortage of sufficiently intense THz emitters. Here we introduce a novel high-field source for THz transients featuring peak amplitudes of...
